Japanese court upholds dismissal of Apple patent suit against Samsung
Japan's Intellectual Property High Court has upheld the Tokyo District Court's dismissal of an Apple lawsuit against Samsung, according to Bloomberg. In August 2012, the District Court ruled that there was no merit to Apple allegations that Samsung had infringed on patents related to media sync on mobile devices. "It's hard to believe the products belong to the range of technologies of the claimant," the judge in the case stated at the time. Apple was ordered to cover the costs of the lawsuit, but filed an appeal of the dismissal in October.

The High Court's ruling marks a relatively rare setback for Apple in its global legal campaign against Samsung. The company won a $1.05 billion judgment in the US in 2012 -- though the total may come down later this year -- and has received a number of favorable rulings in other disputes. In Japan, in fact, a Tokyo court recently ruled that several older Samsung phones violated an Apple "rubber-banding" interface patent.

No surprise there, as Japan and Korea are business competitors. Oh, wait! ;)
