Government websites in South Korea, North Korea attacked by hackers
Government websites in South and North Korea have been attacked by hackers, on the anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Websites, including a number of media servers and one for the presidential Blue House, were taken down in South Korea earlier today, but it is not clear what entity performed the attacks in the first place.

Hacking collective Anonymous intended to take down various North Korean sites in order to "raise international awareness of conditions in the country" as well as forcing leader Kim Jong-un to resign from power, according to The Next Web. A list of target sites was posted on Pastebin by a representative, along with an explanation as to why it wanted to perform the attack in the first place. Anonymous has previously and successfully attacked North Korean sites in the past, pulling 15,000 user records from a news site.

In South Korea, the Blue House and the Office of Government Policy Coordination websites were shut down in the early morning, with two messages briefly appearing on the presidential site, writes the Yonhap News Agency. The first said "Great leader Kim Jong-un," while the second, longer message read "We are Anonymous. We are legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us."

It is possible that rogue members of Anonymous attacked the South Korean sites, but it is also likely that the attacks stemmed from North Korea, using the Anonymous style of warning to shift blame. It is believed that hackers working on behalf of North Korea were behind an attack in March, which took out a number of bank networks in South Korea, suggesting that they are more than capable of performing a similar act again.
At the time of writing, governmental sites in South Korea are either down for maintenance or fully operational. Attacks against North Korean sites continue.
