Google Reader shuttered after eight years, migration options given
Google has closed its RSS reading service, <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288876==http://www.google.com/reader/" rel='nofollow'>Google Reader</a>, after eight years of operation. The shutdown, announced <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288877==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/03/13/move.part.of.googles.continuing.spring.cleaning.pr ogram/" rel='nofollow'>four months ago</a> as part of a wider "spring cleaning effort," now forces users of the web app to sign up with another service, with some alternative RSS collection sites reporting large changes in traffic. <br />
<br />
Existing users of Google Reader will be greeted by a static page with a note from the development team. Users will be able to download Google Reader subscription data via <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288878==https://www.google.com/takeout/" rel='nofollow'>Google Takeout</a> until 12PM PST on July 15th this year, with all remaining data deleted shortly afterward. The Reader team also offers a <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288870==http://alternativeto.net/software/google-reader/" rel='nofollow'>link</a> to a list of other RSS reader options. <br />
<br />
In terms of alternative services, both <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288871==http://www.feedly.com/" rel='nofollow'>Feedly</a> and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288872==http://digg.com/reader" rel='nofollow'>Digg</a> stated their intention to implement their own replacements of the Google Reader API, one that many RSS apps synchronized with. Feedly, with an operational API that is used by a <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288873==http://www.feedly.com/apps.html" rel='nofollow'>number</a> of other apps, had a sudden influx of 500,000 users within <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288874==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/03/16/google.reader.exodus.causes.service.to.use.10.time s.the.bandwidth/" rel='nofollow'>48 hours</a> of the original Google Reader shutdown news, with that number still continuing to increase. <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288875==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/03/15/pulls.existing.reader.plans.for.later.in.the.year. forward/" rel='nofollow'>Digg</a> is still working on its own reader <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288879==http://www.macnn.com/articles/13/06/28/rss.functionality.comes.to.digg.ios.app/" rel='nofollow'>post-launch</a>, and though its API is currently non-existent, it is still proving popular, and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/288880==http://blog.digg.com/post/54377451480/post-launch-update" rel='nofollow'>announced</a> that it is crawling 7.7 million feeds just five days after launch.
