Microsoft breaks 100,000 apps barrier in Windows Store within 8 months
Microsoft has reached the 100,000-app milestone for its Windows Store, according to a company Twitter post. It has taken the Windows 8-based app store just eight months after the operating system's launch to reach the barrier, which comes shortly after Microsoft boasted about reaching 90,000 at its Build developer conference.

The race to 100,000 apps in Windows 8 is much faster than that of Windows Phone, The Verge notes, with the mobile equivalent taking over 18 months to do so. The rapid addition of apps to the Windows Store is slower than Microsoft initially expected it to be, with sales and marketing vice president Keith Lazio suggesting before the Windows 8 launch that the milestone would be hit by February. By the end of December 2012, the store had just 35,000 apps in total.

In comparison, Google passed the 100,000 active apps in Android Market, now Google Play, after 18 months, while the Apple App Store took around 14 months to have 100,000 iPad-native applications.

Microsoft currently expects to have around 175,000 apps in the Windows Store by the end of January 2014.
