Ubisoft servers attacked; usernames, encrypted passwords taken
Servers belonging to video game publisher Ubisoft have been compromised in a recent attack. Hackers are said by the company to have gained access to sensitive data, including usernames, e-mails, and encrypted passwords, and has started to e-mail Uplay account holders to warn about the intrusion and the data loss.

The e-mail, received by two writers for Electronista, states that the company found one website had been exploited, in order to access some online systems. As soon as it was discovered, Ubisoft "instantly took steps to close off this access, investigate the incident and begin restoring the integrity of any compromised systems." While some personal information was taken, Ubisoft notes "that no personal information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your debit/credit card information was safe from this intrusion."

The company recommends that Uplay account holders should reset their password on the service, as well as changing it on other websites where the same credentials are also used.

The attack on Ubisoft is the most recent high-profile game-related hack. In March, "high-profile" employees at Microsoft had their Xbox Live accounts hacked by a group that also performed "swatting" attacks against individuals, while in August last year, World of Warcraft developer Blizzard suffered an intrusion that took the global Battle.net user e-mail list outside of China, security question answers, and authenticator information.
