Target offering gift cards in move to discount iOS devices
North American big-box retailer Target is offering a new promotion in its latest US flyer, offering Target gift cards in varying amounts for the purchase of iOS devices -- including the current iPad models, iPod Touch, Apple TV and iPhone 5. All but the latter are direct rebates in the form of Target gift cards up to $50, while the iPhone 5 discount can be augmented with a trade-in of a previous handset. In addition, the company is selling the iPhone 5 for $149 with a two-year carrier contract. It isn't clear if the gift card is offered for all configurations of the iOS devices, or just specific models.

For the iPad, the ad (first spotted by AppleInsider) specifically mentions the $500 16GB full-size Wi-Fi iPad with Retina display, but infers in the fine print that it applies to any capacity of that model, as well as the iPad 2. "Other Wi-Fi and Cellular models available," the ads says, without specifically saying that they also qualify for the $50 gift card offer. The $330 16GB iPad mini with Wi-Fi qualifies for a $40 Target gift card.

The $100 Apple TV unit nets buyers a $10 gift card, while the latest iPod Touch (16GB) which sells for $229 comes with a $20 gift card. The gift card produces some of the lowest prices available for new Apple iOS products currently available.

The $150 iPhone 5 (normally $199) refers to the 16GB model, which can be activated on either AT&T, Verizon or Sprint and requires a two-year contract and comes with a $25 Target gift card. Buyers can also trade-in their old (but working) cell phone and get a rebate on the value of that unit plus a voucher for $25 off the already-discounted iPhone 5 price, which could result in quite substantial savings if the unit being traded in is a recent smartphone model.

Not all Target locations carry the full line of Apple's iOS products, and the flyer refers to stores with a Target Mobile as having all the offered products. Quantities are limited, and no rain checks will be issued in the event of a sellout. The promotion ends on July 13.
