Venerable MSN TV service shuttering September 30
Microsoft has announced that it is finally discontinuing the MSN TV service, originally known as Web TV. In a FAQ posted over the weekend, Microsoft announced the closure of the dial-up service as set for September 30, after 17 years in operation, and 15 years under the Microsoft banner.
WebTV, later renamed MSN TV, launched in 1996 with the goal of bringing new people into the Information Age with an easy way to access mostly-curated internet content. In its closure statement, Microsoft declares that "the web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the Internet. Accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to end the MSN TV service on September 30, 2013. We are working with our customers to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible."
Microsoft is providing a migration solution for users' data using Outlook. Any saved content must be copied to Microsoft's cloud-based SkyDrive service prior to the shutdown to avoid data loss. Microsoft is providing special offers to MSN TV subscribers if dial-up service is still needed following service shutdown.
