Retina-equipped iPad mini could be ready for October
An iPad mini with a Retina display should show up in 2013, despite recent claims to the contrary, say industry sources for DigiTimes. LG Display is reportedly "making new headway" with Retina technology for the Mini, and should have panels ready in time for an October product refresh. The company is expected to produce 2 to 3 million panels per month in the run up.

The lack of Retina resolution has been one of the most common complaints about the first-generation Mini. Retina displays can be difficult to produce though, especially given that Apple already needs a guaranteed supply for the 9.7-inch iPad and the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pros. The DigiTimes sources note that LG anticipates shipping 2.5 to 3 million 9.7-inch panels per month in the current quarter, of which 1 to 2 million will be for a fifth-gen iPad.
Beyond a sharper display, what advances a new Mini might have been largely left in the dark. Some reports have suggested that the tablet will be thinner and lighter, and reduce bezel size even further. It should also gain a faster processor -- though that could conceivably be an A6, A6X, or A7, depending on economics, the needs of a Retina screen, and Apple's ability to shrink chip design.
