Moto X set to be priced at Nexus 4 equaling $299
The Motorola Moto X is set to be priced at a Nexus 4 equaling $299 off-contract for a 16GB model and just $349 for the 32GB model according to a leak out of China. Although there tremendous hype around the device, most of it has centered on its rumored customizability, but its specifications could well aligned its with its rumored pricing. If the leak is accurate, it could be the first Motorola device to stir consumer interest in the hotly contested smartphone segment in some time.
The Moto X, which was paraded in full public view recently by Google chairman Eric Schmidt, press renders have also leaked with models in both black and white making their way onto the net. Helping to add plausibility to the pricing rumors is its alleged specifications. It will sport an older generation, but capable, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960T) clocked at 1.7GHz paired with 2GB of RAM. It will also center on a 4.5-inch 720p display, which while high-end just 12 months ago, has been superseded by 1080p displays on the flagship models of other makers retailing for considerably more.
Though not confirmed, there is some speculation that Google may also sell the Moto X through the Google store, where it has had considerable success selling its Nexus-branded devices. As a Google-owned company, the tie-up seems inevitable, and it would increase its accessibility and visibility to the wider public. Although Google acquired Motorola for its patent portfolio, the handset maker has been struggling to turn a profit and is in need of a halo product. Unusually for a halo product, its low-end pricing, mid-range specification sheet and rumored customization options could help make the Moto X the hit that Motorola desperately needs.
