T-Mobile will improve 4G LTE speeds by widening spectrum channels
T-Mobile is looking to speed up its 4G LTE network in its top 25 US markets before the end of this year, at the same time as continuing the build-out of the network to markets. The carrier hopes to achieve speed increases by widening the channels available for LTE connections from the current 2x5MHz channels to 2x10MHz versions.

The carrier has reportedly been testing a 2x10MHz site on 11th Avenue in New York City, according to Light Reading. A spokesperson confirmed the temporary speed boost to the publication, stating "For testing purposes... we have been briefly deploying and testing 10+10MHz of LTE in a few areas of the city." The spokesperson advised "In these areas during brief testing windows we have taken HSPA+ 42 to HSPA+ 21, and then restored HSPA+ 42 after the tests," temporarily repurposing spectrum used for 3G access. CEO John Legere has taken to Twitter to tease the fast connection speed, showing speed in tests of around 60Mbps in downstream and around 17Mbps when uploading.

"Nationwide, we plan to deploy 10+10MHz of LTE in 90 percent of the top 25 markets by the end of the year," continued the spokesperson.

During the carrier's Jump program launch in New York earlier this month, it advised that it currently covers 157 million people across the US with LTE, with the service being active in 116 metropolitan areas and 73 of the top 100 markets. T-Mobile is now targeting 200 million people in more than 200 metropolitan areas by the end of the year. To accomplish this, as well as to improve speeds in some areas, it intends to use spectrum picked up from the MetroPCS merger, something it is already using on its network in Las Vegas.
