Sony PlayStation 3 with 12GB flash memory heading to North America
A previously-unavailable version of the Sony PlayStation 3 has will be making its way to North America, after being available in Europe and Hong Kong for a considerable amount of time. The 12GB flash model, shown by the company late last year, has been spotted on the Future Shop website at a cost of $200, but has since been removed from view.
The console's sudden appearance is a reversal from what the entertainment company said after its launch. Engadget was told by SCEA vice president of marketing John Koller in September that "The smaller Flash drive isn't coming to North America," citing that the lower-capacity model was an issue to gamers purchasing downloadable content. An image received by the report also shows the 12GB model in Kmart somewhere in the United States, complete with a sticker advising not to display or sell the model until the 18th of August.
The 12GB "super slim" PS3 was found to have the option to slide in a 2.5-inch hard disk, alongside the 12GB of storage. This could in theory allow device owners to add their own high-capacity drives to the console, giving them the benefit of faster loading times for content stored on the flash memory, as well as high storage quantities.
