Briefly: Microsoft closing QR code alternative, Google outage costs
Microsoft will be shuttering its QR code competitor in the next few years, according to e-mails sent to customers. The <a href="" rel='nofollow'>Microsoft Tag</a> service, which allows companies to embed data into an image for scanning by a smartphone application, will end on August 19th, 2015, <a href="" rel='nofollow'>reports</a> <em>Engadget</em>. Despite its impending demise, the format will still operate via QR code service <a href="" rel='nofollow'>Scanbuy</a>, which will start to support aspects of Microsoft Tag from September this year. <br />

<strong>Five-minute Google outage to cost $500,000, lowers global traffic by 40 percent</strong><br />

A Google services outage lowered global Internet traffic by around 40 percent, according to web analytics <a href="" rel='nofollow'>firm</a> <em>GoSquared</em>. The five-minute outage on August 16th, visible on the Google Apps <a href="" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">Dashboard</a> across all services, is believed to have cost the company around $500,000 for the five minutes it was down for, claims Tribal Worldwide analyst Phil Dearson speaking <a href="" rel='nofollow'>to</a> <em>Sky News</em>, with the issue thought to be a "physical infrastructure problem."
