Apple at work on new Apple TV set-top, multiple reports claim
Apple is preparing a new version of its Apple TV set-top, which could ship as soon as October, according to well-known tech commentator M.G. Siegler. The claim is backed up by 9to5Mac, which says that while it's not sure when the device will arrive, sources indicate that the hardware is at least in development. The site adds that the unit should keep the same overall form factor, and that Apple is separately continuing work on a full-scale TV, as well as possible Kinect-style motion controls for TV products.
The hardware refresh is notably separate from a firmware update expected to arrive next week. That code will reportedly give existing Apple TVs better AirPlay compatibility, letting them stream music and videos hosted in iCloud from users other than the set-top's main owner. The feature may be intended to make the Apple TV more competitive with Google's Chromecast, which lets people push music and videos via any compatible device connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
If it does ship in October, the new Apple TV will likely be arriving alongside new iPods and iPads. It's unclear what Apple would add to the device, though. Some possibilities include an A6 chip and support for 4K video and HDMI 2.0, but none of the videos on the iTunes Store (or many other services) go beyond 2K resolution (1080p).
