Sony explains why it opted for LCD, not OLED in the new PS Vita
Sony has offered its reasons for switching from the OLED display technology in the original PS Vita to an LCD panel in the new PS Vita, reports Nikkei. According to Sony Computer Europe President and CEO Andrew House, the decision was made because the LCD display in the new PS Vita matches the quality of the previous OLED panel. Apparently, the new LCD panel also contributed to Sony's ability to make the updated console 20 percent slimmer.

"The main reason is that the LCD panel can now realize an image quality as high as that of the OLED panel," House said. The company's new Triluminos for Mobile LCD displays are excellent, as we discovered in our review of the Xperia Z Ultra, however, there is no indication from Sony whether it used its proprietary technology in the new PS Vita as well. The original OLED panel in the PS Vita remains an excellent unit, far exceeding the typical quality of the AMOLED panels typically found in Samsung's devices from the same period.

Although House did not mention it, LCD panels are also usually cheaper to produce than OLED panels, which could also be a reason why Sony opted to revert to the more traditional display technology. We plan to do a comparison of the displays of the original PS Vita and the revised model when it arrives in mid to late October. We are looking forward to its reduced footprint and 15 percent lighter weight, both of which will be welcome. We are also looking forward to ditching the proprietary charger used in the original device, which has now been replaced by a standard microUSB charging port.
