Hands on: Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet with Bay Trail, Windows 8.1
After struggling to gain traction in the tablet market with the XPS 10, Dell is making a fresh push with its upcoming Venue 8 Pro. The eight-inch tablet promises to deliver a full Windows 8.1 experience and competitive battery life, thanks to Intel's new Bay Trail platform. Electronista met with the company this week at IDF to check out the upcoming tablet in person.

The Venue 8 Pro looks and feels like most other tablets in the same size class, with a plastic housing and relatively thin profile. The device is not as iconic as the iPad or certain high-end Android competitors, but it doesn't feel cheap.
The Windows 8.1 interface looks great on the eight-inch IPS panel, which appears bright and provides extremely wide viewing angles. With 1920x1080 resolution, it is perfect for HD videos and compares well against the resolution of many Android and Windows RT tablets.

We were impressed with overall performance when performing basic tasks such as web browsing or video playback. Bay Trail hardware appears to be quick enough to bring a basic desktop-level experience to compact tablets, overcoming the issues that limited Windows RT devices.
Unfortunately Dell has yet to announce a price tag for the Venue 8 Pro. If the company can match or beat the $349 entry price of Asus' T100, it will certainly have a compelling offering.
