Canon shows off new CMOS video sensor in nighttime firefly video
Canon has released a promotional video shot using one of the company's new 35mm full-frame CMOS sensors. A camera prototype outfitted with the sensor successfully captured Yaeyama-hime fireflies, along with the surrounding vegetation, in a forest on Japan's Ishigaki Island off the northeastern coast of Taiwan.

The video was shot in 1920x1080 resolution at 30 frames per second, in an environment that was said to have background lighting of less than 0.01 lux. In contrast, Canon notes that a full moon provides approximately 0.3 lux and a crescent moon is still triple the forest lighting with 0.03 lux.
The company suggests the sensor technology is ideally suited to astronomical and natural observation, with potential applications in other fields such as medical research and crime-prevention surveillance. It remains unclear if the sensor will eventually make its way into consumer photography gear, however.
