Google creates Calico startup, aims to extend human lifespan
Google is reportedly preparing to launch a new startup, Calico, that will focus on health care. The endeavor is expected to receive more attention and funding than many of the company's other side projects, with the aim of eventually contributing to longer human lifespan, according to a TIME report.

The company has not disclosed details surrounding specific technologies that it will try to develop in the healthcare industry, though CEO Larry Page acknowledges the need to look forward "10 to 20 years" when attempting to make any significant contribution.

"Maybe we should shoot for the things that are really, really important so ten or 20 years from now we have those things done," Page said in the interview.

Calico will be headed by Art Levinson, a biotech veteran who served as CEO of Genentech. He will also be a founding investor in the startup, and has no immediate plans to leave his current position as chairman of Apple's board.
"For too many of our friends and family, life has been cut short or the quality of their life is too often lacking," said Apple CEO Tim Cook. "Art is one of the crazy ones who thinks it doesn't have to be this way. There is no one better suited to lead this mission and I am excited to see the results."
