Microsoft could use Windows RT on phablets in future
Microsoft may still be working on a way for Windows RT to still be useful, following its relative lack of success with the platform in the <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294420==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/08/13/firm.suing.has.history.of.capitalizing.on.market.f ailures/" rel='nofollow'>Surface RT</a>. Executive vice president Terry Myerson, head of the operating system at Microsoft, hinted that Windows RT may find a useful place in phablets at some point in the future. <br />
<br />
Speaking at Microsoft's <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294421==http://www.microsoft.com/investor/Events/FAM/2013/default.aspx?eventid=133344" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">Financial Analyst Meeting</a> on Thursday, <em>ZDNet</em> <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294422==http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-phablets-are-windows-rts-future-7000020932/" rel='nofollow'>reports</a> that, in response to a question asking about Windows RT, Myerson suggested that the blurred lines between smartphones and tablets may be key. "Windows RT was our first ARM tablet. And as phones extend into tablets, expect us to see many more ARM tablets, Windows ARM tablets in the future," said Myerson, while also noting the <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294415==http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/08/13/power.nap.like.functionality.up.to.13.hours.hd.pla yback/" rel='nofollow'>long battery life</a> of ARM-based devices. <br />
<br />
As the market moves towards putting <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294416==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/03/29/ms.clears.the.way.for.the.introduction.of.smaller. windows.8.tablets/" rel='nofollow'>full installations</a> of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 onto tablets rather than Windows RT, putting Windows RT onto a device larger than a standard smartphone could work for Microsoft, especially considering the similarities between it and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294417==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/18/accreditation.of.windows.phone.8.brings.it.in.line .with.apple.samsung/" rel='nofollow' target="_self" title="">Windows Phone</a>. With the <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294418==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/07/microsoft.buying.nokia.will.tear.down.secrecy.wall s/" rel='nofollow'>Nokia acquisition</a> in progress and the <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/294419==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/17/six.inch.nokia.phablet.101.inch.windows.rt.tablet. could.be.shown/" rel='nofollow'>Lumia 1520 phablet</a> expected to be shown in October, Microsoft may soon have the means to make it work, and like the Surface, provide its own devices.
