Asus chairman keeps an 'open mind' about possible Acer merger
Taiwan-based computer producers Acer and Asus could potentially merge in the future, according to a new report. Asus chairman Johnny Shih, responding to a query relating to a possible merging of the two companies, suggested that the industry is currently in a transitional period, and that everyone involved should "keep an open mind" about such a prospect.

Acer founder Stan Shih advised to China Times that it was best to "go with the flow" and to be "open-minded," and that if either company were to approach the other, they should do so with a "benevolent spirit" and to act for the maximum benefit of both companies involved.

The two companies have been heading in a similar direction for the last few years, with both offering relatively identical product ranges at times. A merger would in theory strengthen the two companies into one larger entity, and possibly help all involved weather what has been previously called the worst year in 20 years for PC shipments.

Talk of a merger affected the markets, with Asus shares rising 1.69 percent by the end of the day yesterday, and Acer's shares also going up by 0.5 percent.
