Facebook developing 'deep learning' AI to understand user posts
Facebook is reportedly developing a "deep learning" artificial-intelligence technology to help understand content posted by users. A small research group within the company is said to be delving into the new methods, which aim to simulate a network of brain cells when processing data.

The company's chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer, suggests data collected using AI technology could help the company improve its news feed, which already implements traditional learning techniques to curate posts, according to a MIT Technology Review report that was referenced by Engadget. The executive admits the need to enhance its selection process in response to the growing number of updates.

"The data set is increasing in size, people are getting more friends, and with the advent of mobile, people are online more frequently," Schroepfer added.

The same technology is also said to be potentially suitable for automatic photo organization and best-shot selection, or as a way to improve ad targeting.

Facebook's research is being kept mostly secret, however the team is expected to publish general information regarding deep learning as they continue to develop the technology.
