BlackBerry Messenger app rollout stalled over Android app leak
The launch of BlackBerry Messenger on platforms other than the company's smartphones has hit a roadblock, after both the Android and iOS versions of the app were pulled from the relevant app stores. A leaked version of its Android app apparently caused more than 1.1 million users to try out the service within eight hours, before the app was even released.
The official BlackBerry blog states that the unreleased version "caused issues" and is still being rectified. Those using the leaked Android app will be prevented from using the service until it is released properly. The iOS version, which did receive an official release for a few hours, will continue to work properly, though once its current capacity issues are fixed it will continue to be released on a region-by-region basis.
The error-prone launch is the latest issue for the struggling company, which has revealed it will be cutting its workforce by approximately 4,500 staff, and is expected to report a quarterly operating loss of close to $1 billion.
