Toshiba intros 'deep focus' phone camera module with two sensors
Toshiba has introduced a smartphone camera module that utilizes two sensors to capture "deep focus" images. The technology appears to be similar to Lytro's cameras, simultaneously capturing images and depth data. Users can then manipulate the depth of field or focal plane after taking a single picture.
The integrated processor outputs a 13-megapixel still, though the final picture is a composition from each of the five-megapixel sensors arranged side by side. The module also features a digital focus system that is said to eliminate the need for mechanical components.
Aside from post-capture focus manipulation, Toshiba also suggests the technology could be used for object extraction and gesture input. A press release referenced by Engadget hints that the company may enable third parties to create new applications for such features.
Toshiba expects mass production to begin in April.
