Netflix opens up Super HD video streams to all subscribers
Netflix has opened up its "Super HD" video streams to all subscribers, regardless of provider. The loosening of restrictions comes after a period of monitoring by the media streamer, with the company saying that "based on the performance data we've seen, and in response to member requests, we are now expanding availability to give all our members the ability to enjoy Netflix in the best possible quality."
Netflix Super HD video streams at 1080p resolution, to devices including the Apple TV (third generation), PlayStation 3, some Roku devices, and the Wii U. Netflix's "adaptive streaming" techniques are still in play, so depending on network condition, any given customer's ability to receive the Super HD stream may vary. There is no additional charge to the subscriber for Super HD video viewing.
Not all content is available in Super HD. Netflix said in a blog post announcing the availability that the company "continues to encourage ISPs to adopt Netflix Open Connect, our highly-optimized video content delivery network. Open Connect is available at no cost to ISPs, and is designed to deliver the best possible Netflix experience by storing the TV shows and movies Netflix members want to watch as close to them as possible."
