Samsung claims 100 million ChatON messaging subscribers
Samsung claims that its cross-platform ChatON messaging service now has a "global subscriber base of over 100 million users." The service, first launched in October 2011 is available as an app on PCs, Samsung feature phones, as well as Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. The company says that it crested the wave of 50 million subscribers in May this year, will the latest 50 million users added in the past four months alone. In touting the popularity of the app across the platforms, Samsung's promotional artwork includes images of Apple's iPad and iPhone, along with a BlackBerry device and a couple of its own, one running Android, the other Windows Phone 8.
Samsung attributes the platform's popularity to its wide availability and the fact that it preloads its Galaxy branded smartphones with the app available out of the box. Leading ChatON service users are located in India, China and the US, while Samsung says that its popularity is spreading through Europe and the Middle East. It also credits the 63 languages supported by ChatON, while Samsung says that it has built in support for 10 regional dialects in India, with a total of 13 to be accommodated by the end of the year. Additional features including the Ramandan Anicon have also proven popular with Middle Eastern users.
Samsung's ChatON competes directly with Apple's Messages application that comes standard on Macs running Mountain Lion, and iOS devices including Apple's iPad, iPhone and iPods. Apple is yet to open up the service to other platforms with the likelihood remaining low. BlackBerry's Messenger remains one of its most valued assets and was recently opened up to iOS and Android users, while third-party cross-platform messaging apps including WhatsApp, have also proven popular with users looking to utilize their data plans instead of paying for expensive carrier SMS services.
100 Million Users...impressive...don't remember ever hearing of this service. Samsung doesn't really have a good track record of being honest about their numbers. Maybe if they say that they invented it before Apple iMessage or Blackberry BBM, someone might care.

While I also doubt their claims based on their track record, it is theoretically possible -- counting every single Samsung smartphone user as a ChatOn user regardless of whether they actually use the service or not, for example. Purely anecdotal, but none of my Samsung-using friends even knew what I was talking about when I asked if they used it.
