NTT DoCoMo blames iPhone supply issues for dip in subscribers
Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo lays the blame for a record monthly fall in subscribers with Apple, despite having only <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295689==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/05/iphone.5s.5c.should.be.carriers.first.offerings/" rel='nofollow'>recently agreed</a> to carry the iPhone on its network. The carrier claims that the loss of 66,800 subscribers in September was down to the lack of stock for the newly-released <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295690==http://www.macnn.com/reviews/16gb-apple-iphone-5c-in-white.html" rel='nofollow'>iPhone 5c</a> and <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295691==http://www.macnn.com/reviews/apple-iphone-5s.html" rel='nofollow'>iPhone 5s</a>. <br />
<br />
Adequate stocks of the new iPhones in KDDI and SoftBank allowed both carriers to see large increases in subscriber numbers, <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295692==http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/10/07/docomo-sales-idUKT9N0HS00A20131007" rel='nofollow'>reports</a> <em>Reuters</em>, though the exact rises are not revealed. It is also not known if the stock issue was for both versions of the iPhone or just for the iPhone 5s, which also had a few <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295693==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/20/gold.sells.out.in.28.minutes/" rel='nofollow'>notable supply problems</a>. <br />
<br />
The lack of stock could be attributed to the relative newness of the iPhone to the carrier, with NTT DoCoMo signing a deal with Apple to carry the device in early September. While it was the last of the major Japanese carriers to have the smartphone on its network, it is reportedly paying heavily for the privilege, with NTT DoCoMo being required to make at least <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/295694==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/09/12/deal.may.impose.major.burden.on.carrier/" rel='nofollow'>40 percent</a> of its smartphone sales consist of the iPhone 5s or 5c.
