LG Chem starts production of curved batteries for future smartphones
LG has started mass production of curved batteries, something which it hopes to use in future smartphone designs. The new batteries will remove the need for manufacturers to design a mobile phone or tablet with a rectangular battery in mind, with the curved version seemingly being built to work alongside the also-announced curved smartphone displays.

Separate "Stack & Folding" technology can reduce the physical stress on the curved battery packs when compared to existing battery construction methods. Manufacturing of these batteries have started this month. It can also be used alongside the "Stepped Battery" technology used in the LG G2, which Engadget reports improved the battery capacity by 16 percent. By employing a Stepped Battery technique, one which uses multiple layers of batteries in order to create a specific shape, could be used to fill areas of a mobile device that would otherwise just be left empty, or in the case of smart watches, efficiently use the space in order to reduce the device's size.
A third battery type, a "Cable Battery," was also brought up by the company, with LG suggesting it will be put into production in the "upcoming years." The cable is designed to not heat up due to expected low energy requirements of such devices, making it relatively safe to be used on a worn device. It is bendable, waterproof, and could also be tied into a knot, making it highly useful for smart watches.

LG Chem will be showing all of the batteries at InterBattery 2013 from October 16th.
