BlackBerry debuts cloud-based management for BB, iOS, Android
BlackBerry today launched a new cloud-based, multi-platform mobile device management (MDM) service. The technology lets organizations manage BlackBerry, Android, and iOS devices simultaneously on their networks, tackling functions like security policies and app distribution. Administrators can create catalogs of "public" apps culled from BlackBerry World, Google Play, and the iOS App Store, and track both distribution and usage.

The people actually using devices have some limited control via a self-service console. It offers options like creating or changing passwords, and administrator-free remote wipe and lock requests.
The service represents another way in which BlackBerry is trying to reduce its dependence on proprietary hardware and software. Despite once being dominant in the smartphone industry, BlackBerry has been rapidly losing share of the market over the past few years, to the point that it has dropped out of the top five phone vendors in the US. The company is currently on the verge of acquisition.
