Motorola to tout Moto X with Moto Maker in physical Wired magazines
Motorola will tout its Moto X customizable smartphone next month in the print edition of Wired with an interactive ad that slightly mimics the company's Moto Maker customization site. Mashable reported on Thursday that about 153,490 copies of the January 2014 issue of Wired will be distributed in New York and Chicago with paper-thin electronic components integrated into a page. That page will hold Motorola's Moto X ad, which will change the color of the Moto X unit on the page with the press of a button.

The novel ad's design was accomplished through the use of a single panel behind the page, paired with an assortment of LEDs. It won't entirely reproduce the functionality of Moto Maker, which allows users to alter the color of highlights and will eventually give the option for a wooden backing, but it allows them to switch colors of the device on page quickly.
Motorola has been rolling out Moto Maker to the major American wireless carriers over the past several weeks. Despite reports of lackluster sales of the flagship device, Motorola appears committed to the notion of customizable phones. The company recently said that the Moto Maker site could one day be used to make modular smartphones, ones in which users could choose aspects such as the type of camera and sensors a phone would have.
