Galaxy S4, Note 3 to get KitKat in January or February
Samsung's two newest flagships may see an update to the latest flavor of Android, <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/10/31/kitkat.said.to.run.on.lower.power.devices/">version 4.4 KitKat</a>, as early as January of next year. French carrier SFR has <a href="http://smartphones.sfr.fr/android/android-4-4-bientot-sur-samsung-galaxy-s4-sfr-et-galaxy-note-3-sfr/">announced</a> that the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 – both released earlier this year – will see an update to Android 4.4 around the end of January or the beginning of February of 2014. The carrier, <a href="http://www.sammobile.com/2013/12/18/android-4-4-kitkat-coming-to-galaxy-s4-and-note-3-in-late-january-says-french-carrier-sfr/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=androi d-4-4-kitkat-coming-to-galaxy-s4-and-note-3-in-late-january-says-french-carrier-sfr&utm_reader=feedly">according to</a> <em>SamMobile</em>, has a healthy record of tipping release dates before Samsung does, so owners of the two new flagships may just a little over one month before they can have the most recent software on their devices.<br /><br />The <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/300844==www.electronista.com/articles/13/05/19/how.do.the.us.and.international.versions.of.the.ga laxy.s4.stack.up/" rel='nofollow'>Galaxy S4</a> was released in April of this year, arriving with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean installed. That handset, the latest in the line of Samsung's best selling devices, saw an update to Android 4.3 just a few weeks ago. <br />

<br />
The <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/300845==www.electronista.com/reviews/samsungs-galaxy-note-3.html" rel='nofollow'>Galaxy Note 3</a> – itself the latest installment in a line that has sold tens of millions of units – debuted in October running Android 4.3. The carrier gave no word on when other Samsung flagship devices, such as the Galaxy Note 2 or the Galaxy S III, might receive the update.<br />
<br />
Samsung has been quiet on when exactly its devices can expect to see an update to the latest version of Android. Whereas a number of other carriers have either <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/300846==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/11/01/moto.x.current.droid.range.to.gain.kitkat/" rel='nofollow'>already updated their handsets</a> or <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/300847==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/10/31/htc.confirms.update.windows.for.flagship/" rel='nofollow'>given a solid timeline</a> for when consumers can expect the update, Samsung has only given encouraging signs that it will in fact push out the update for its devices at some point. <br />
<br />
The update to KitKat will not bring much in the way of user interface changes. Instead, the operating system may run more smoothly on high-end devices, as Google has slimmed down its operating system, removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that users access often. Google has, though, built in a search feature for the phone's dialer, and integrated SMS and MMS messaging into its Hangouts app.
