Google acquires Green Throttle Games for staff, technology
Google has acquired the remnants of Green Throttle Games, four months after the service closed to its users. Portions of the company have been bought by the search giant, though terms of the deal remain undisclosed by either side, with the purchase potentially being a sign that Google is becoming more serious about making a set-top box.
Two of the three founders of Green Throttle, Matt Crowley and Karl Townsend of Palm Pilot fame, as well as a number of other key staff will be joining Google as part of the deal, reports Pandodaily. The company originally offered Bluetooth game controllers that let users turn an Android tablet into a game console, but pulled a supporting app in November last year following a lack of support.
Currently, Google offers a number of items for use the living room. Aside from Google TV devices, it has found considerable success with the Chromecast, and has been rumored to expand its efforts and release a new Android set-top box sometime this year. It is thought that the technology acquired from Green Throttle, as well as the knowledge of its staff, could be used to give the rumored device some gaming credentials, though this would pit it against similar Android console releases such as the Ouya and the Mojo, and Amazon's own development efforts.
