Nest spreads Thermostat to United Kingdom, offers free installation
Nest has opened up sales of its smart Thermostat in the United Kingdom, marking the first time the device has gone on sale outside of the United States and Canada. The smart digital thermostat from the Google-owned company joins the Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector on sale in the country, and could be the sign of a further expansion into Europe.
The company advises that the Learning Thermostat had to be updated to cope with UK heating systems, which are far less standardized when compared to the United States. Nest currently recommends the use of a professional installation instead of allowing the buyer to install it themselves, due to UK boilers typically using high-voltage wires. Since most boilers in the country do not have a thermostat control, the installer will also add a Heat Link box to the boiler, allowing Nest to wirelessly interface with it. Nest is also introducing a stand that can allow the Thermostat to be freely placed anywhere in the home, rather than mounted to the wall.

Just as with the US model, it is able to create a schedule to turn the boiler on and off, learning from the home owner's preferences for temperatures at specific times of the day. By tracking the last 10 days of heating, the Thermostat can report the energy use of the heating system, advising where the weather has caused adjustments, and when Auto-Away makes automatic changes, with a monthly energy report providing further information on usage.

Including installation within ten days for purchases before April 8th, Nest is selling the Thermostat for £179 ($298), or £249 ($415) for an installation within four days. The stand is priced at £29 ($48).
