Hulu will offer full episodes on mobile devices this summer
Hulu will be enabling full episode streaming on its mobile apps for all users, the streaming service has revealed. Previously only available to Hulu Plus subscribers, users will be able to watch a selection of complete episodes of shows on mobile devices for free on the advertising-supported service from this summer, on top of the existing free service available via the desktop.
As well as the free programming, the company will be launching a "next generation" Hulu Plus app for iOS, according to CEO Mike Hopkins in a blog post. The app will apparently launch later this summer, though further details about the app and Android update plans were not revealed.
The post also celebrated its Hulu Plus success, with its subscriber count surpassing 6 million users, up from the 5 million it declared in December. A total of 400 million Internet-connected devices in the United States can access Hulu Plus, with the average number of minutes viewed by users increasing by over 30 percent after the company redesigned versions of its app for living room devices, such as the Roku and Wii-U.
In terms of content, Hulu announced it has ordered a second season of Deadbeat, and has set premiere dates for the second season of three other shows: The Awesomes, Quick Draw, and East Los High. The streaming service has also pledged that it will "more than triple our content marketing spend" over the next year to increase viewing figures for its original content.
