A statement from Samsung Electronics advised the company would be offering compensation to the families and employees affected by fatalities in the production facilities, as well as those suffering from illnesses possibly provoked from the working conditions. <br />

"Several workers at our production facilities suffered from leukemia and other incurable diseases, which also lead to some deaths," said Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun, according <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309780==http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2014/05/14/0200000000AEN20140514003100320.html" rel='nofollow'>to</a> <em>Yonhap News</em>. "We should have settled the issue earlier. We are deeply heartbroken that we failed to do so and express our deep apology." <em>Bloomberg</em> <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309781==http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-05-14/samsung-to-compensate-employees-over-cancer-claims.html" rel='nofollow'>reports</a> a third-party panel will be formed to mediate the issue and decide on fair compensation for those affected. <br />

In March, an <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309782==http://www.electronista.com/articles/14/03/27/third.major.gas.related.incident.at.samsung.facili ties.in.18.month.period/" rel='nofollow'>employee died</a> in a factory after gas leaked from a malfunctioning fire suppression system. Two separate instances in 2013 involved hydrofluoric acid gas in the same facility, with the <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309783==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/01/28/pair.of.hydrofluoric.acid.leaks.not.reported.to.au thorities/" rel='nofollow'>first</a> killing one employee and hospitalizing four, and the second <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309784==http://www.electronista.com/articles/13/05/02/hydrofluoric.acid.incident.re.occurs.in.hazardous. processor.factory/" rel='nofollow'>injuring three</a>. In 2011, a Samsung-commissioned investigation found no link between workers suffering from leukemia and its processor production facilities, though a recent <em>Bloomberg</em> <a href="http://macnn.com/rd/309785==http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-04-10/deaths-at-samsung-alter-south-koreas-corporate-is-king-mindset" rel='nofollow'>report</a> claims multiple cases exist.
