10.1.1 insomnia - need help!

My G4 bought in February slept very well under nine, but under X, the screen goes dark grey (not black), the tower is still making noise.
Except for this, X works fine, no problems.
I'm running both 9.2.2 and 10.1.1 on the same disk on two different partitions. What am I doing wrong?

Do you have any PCI card?

The machine is a G4/466 with 384Mb. I had a Belkin pci-to-usb expansion card which did prevent the mac from going to sleep in 9, thus I removed it. I now have an external usb-hub, no airport, no additional HD, no Zip, only the apple soundballs.

I asked a colleague who has a beige G3 and his system doesn't go to sleep either, although i think this has to do with his machine and is not related to the osx.
