Hey, guys,
it is of only limited interest but there is a way to add Cyrillic QWERTY support in OS X 10.1. It involves replacing two files while logged in as a root. I did this and it is working like a charm. More info can be found here (http://homepage.mac.com/powermic/). Of course, it is in Russian, but if you type in Russian there is a pretty good chance that you read it, too.

There's also xRussifyMac that you can download from Macintosh.ru (http://www.macintosh.ru).

Well, xrussify is not optimized for 10.1 and it will do funny things to it. I learned the hard way.

Well, I guess many things may have gone wrong, but I figured out that it was xrussify that made my computer forget the preferences, some fonts were distorted, and the Apple logo in the upper left corner was gone. I had to reinstall all the system software. But my point is that the solution in my initial post was very simple and it works like a charm.

yep. A prof of mine tried the Russify Mac QWERTY and it gave him serious problems. He wound up formatting and reinstalling.

Thanks for the QWERTY hack! Spacibo bol'shoe! Kakoi ti molodets!

Well, there are two folders there, and one of them is screwy and the other one is not. The procedure, though, was so simple. activate roo account, log out, login as a root, replace the files, log out, login as yourself, and you are in business. I can't believe Apple won't do it. As if the empire does not exist anymore. By the way, pozhaluista!
