Is it just me or does the finder open the Volumes folder every time you mount a network share? is this a feature? how can I make it stop!

Ain't it a bugger? Especially if you prefer column view.

It's been like that since 10.2. I don't think earlier versions did this.

I guess Apple added this to satisfy the newbie users that didn't see anything happening when they clicked 'Connect To' (when the desktop is set to now show volumes). They could've done it more elegantly though.

Doesn't do this on any of the 3 machines on which I have Jaguar installed.

It does this on both my machines. I wouldn't have thought that this is a feature, as the Volumes folder is usually hidden and its presence would confuse users.

Do you all have "Show hidden files and folders" checked in your preferences?

Now that I look for it, I can't even find that option in Jag...

No I don't. The only place you would ever see it as a preference is in TinkerTool.

Does this happen only when you are set to not show volumes on desktop?

Nope. I show remote volumes on my desktop and it still shows up.

I think it's a (hopefully temporary) workaround for a persistent bug from 10.1:

When you connect to a server, sometimes it doesn't show up right away in the virtual "Computer" folder. This is even though the server was mounted, and appears in the Volumes directory.

So instead of opening the Computer folder when you connect, Apple resorted to opening '/Volumes'.

Hopefully they'll work out the bug and change it from /Volumes to Computer, which shows the nice icons, etc.
