Lame, the only thing it syncs with Palms is calendar and to-do liss...NO contacts/addresses! PLus, you have to use the hotsync button on cradle, it doesn't work from the iSync panel. They better fix this for the final release...

"You can use iSync to synchronize your Address Book contacts and iCal calendar and To Do information on your Mac with the contacts and calendar on Palm OS devices like the Palm m515 Handheld and the Handspring Treo. To do this, make sure you have iCal 1.0 (or later) and HotSync 3.0 (or later) for Mac OS X installed on your computer. Then just add your Palm OS device to iSync, and youre home free."

how about the ability to sync files, f.x Quicken files or something like that between two or more computers?

Pretty cool but why does it save my contacts as one file ( iSync.vcf ) one my iPod. Damn that warning box looks good :-)

I would prefer to sync iCal on my PowerBook and my G4 via Airport without having to use .Mac.

You're right, my bad; I quickly read this in the beta notes and misinterpreted:

"The Mac OS X Address Book does not display Palm Addresses category information"

I've synced my Visor, and it works well. Too bad iCal is SO F-ING SLOW. That *really* needs to be addressed.

Visor? The Apple's site says 4.0 and above, I thought Hanspring only made Visors with 3.5. I don't have mine on me at the moment or I'd just give it a whirl.

Handspring just came out with their own version of Palm Desktop 4.0, works dandy.

O.K. where is this in the UI Guidelines?!

Holy cow. Now that Brushed Metal is a standard built in System thing they feel like they need a new custom window style!

Some poking around turned up this interesting bit inside one of the Sync bundles:
http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/PalmSet.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/palmV.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/Palm-III.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/M105.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/Visor.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/Treo.png http://homepage.mac.com/mithras1/screenshots/isync/Clie.png

Left to right: A set of Palms, a Palm V, Palm III, Palm m105, Handspring Visor, Handspring Treo, and Sony Clie NR70.

My Clie shows up with the Palm V icon now; I assume everyone's Palm-OS PDA does too? But this indicates they had planned, or still do plan, to give you a spiffy little custom graphic.

Interesting, especially since the Clie NR70 isn't even supported on the Mac (without the 3rd-party MissingSync software).

If only they'd customize that darn 'Computer' toolbar icon too... :)

EDIT:
smiley is for those who might remember the long-lived "computer icons" thread, for which I wrote an Applescript that detected your machine type and downloaded the appropriate toolbar icon... a reminiscent smile, in other words.

but back to isync.

You can do this with Candy Bar (http://www.iconfactory.com/cb_home.asp).

Actually, I wrote the whole topic as all uppercase, but the vBulletin software changed the capitalization when I posted...

I really hoped there was no need for Palm Desktop and that iSync could do all the work.

@ Mitras: where did you find those icons? and what telephone icons are hidden inside iSync?

Sony PDAs dont even synch with OSX properly, do they? And is Palm OS5 compatibility ready?

Anyway, I hate Sony Clies but here's a page with Palm OS5 pics

Can anyone get the .Mac synchronisation to work ? First off, I couldn't register my machine, and now I keep getting account status errors.

Annoying.

Apple should make direct computer->computer synchronisation without the need for .Mac

only the Sony's with the internal MP3 decoder will not synch.

The other models SHOULD be recognized by the generic Palm desktop sw.

I believe that the problem with the MP3 decoder Sony's is that their USB controller chip reports a different mfg/model # than the Palm sw is expecting, possibly a side effect of the MP3 decoder support.

I would love to be able to sync my data to a central file server and have my desktop and laptop sync off it. I don't want to have my entire home directory on that server, just things like my Address book where if I make a change to one, I'll likely change the other as well.

I wish Apple didn't want to sell .Mac so much. It's making otherwise sweet software useless to someone like me who doesn't have a PDA, mobile phone, or iPod.

It's working almost OK for me. The addressbook syncs fine between my three computers. Asks me if I want to modify, fixing conflicts etc.
It DID screw up my iCal calendars though...Turned all of them Read Only on all computers, so I can't make any changes on either of my computers...Very strange.
