Can anyone explain why content indexing doesn't work?

When I first bought OS X.2, the indexing process worked, but the indexing results from the Find command was pitiful, but ever since 2 weeks ago (even before all of the OS X updates), content indexing fails to run. It will say "indexing" for 2 seconds, and then say "not indexed." Any ideas? Thanks.

In the strangest turn of events, it seemed to have fixed itself. Now, that is really weird.
