I think that they upgrade the processor speeds too. Now that they took the single PM away and bumped the iMacs there is a speedgap in the product line. The new imacs should be around 1,6 to 1,8 GHz.

There is no LED or visible place for it on the mobo. But the port is AAUI and it needs a tranciever to get connected into a coaxial or rj45 network and those adapters usually have an indicator LED on...

The fan speed is NOT controlled by software. Just think of a infinite loop going on and the fans shut down. That case would fry the processors if they don't have thermal shutdown.
