what appears to be a hard drive problem is not always so.... do a careful check of your ram. os x is very demanding, and ram that runs fine with os 9 can be frightful running os x.

From problems of my own making i found it necessary to initialize the drive running X 10.1.5. i reinstalled 10. it worked. did updates to 10.0.4...
