I would definitely recommend getting a white iBook over clamshell. The better screen resolution plus the faster graphics card and processor make it well worthwhile. Even a new one is fairly cheap....

You do not need to purchase new graphics cards. The cards in those machines are fully supported by OS X.
Also, ADC can be changed to DVI or VGA with an adaptor, so you can use your Apple ADC...

I installed OS X without problems on my beige G3. The beige is the minimum spec machine that Apple supports. It also does not accelerate the Rage II+ graphics card in the Rev. A machines.
