Finally tracked it down to what I presume to be a corrupted audio clip. After deleting the last clip in the audio track all was well.

FYI, its better to use vi (or similar) as the word separator is ^@ and textedit doesn't seem to handle this. in vi this is <ctrl><shift>2.
