I agree... usually these are kept locally (at least with IE, which I'm unfortunate to code for on a daily basis). That's what makes it odd. I honestly don't know how Safari handles its drop-down...

It is a bit of a stretch, but I've seen it happen on my IIS machines at work -- another session ID got crossed with your session ID on the server side, and it fed you a cookie that wasn't truly yours...

Command-clicking on a link is the only way to force this behaviour.

You can also right-click (ctrl-click) on the link, then select the appropriate menu item.
