I think MotionX Player requires little to no attention to play compared to Chess. Hence how Jaw was able to play while driving.

Yeah but the only thing about Fireworks was that it didn't come free with Photoshop, seeing as it is apart of the web design collection. Usually when you just buy photoshop you also get image ready...

Well I used it mostly for making GIF animations. It's not really discontinued it's just integrated in Photoshop.

Humm those programs would run a lot smoother on the Mac Book Pro especially if you are going to be using Maya. However I do see your problem with funding.
