I don't know of any apps that will do that, unfortunately. But depending on what applications you're using the feature might be built-in. For instance, Adobe's apps have a "workspaces" feature...

You can also just "hide" those icons, rather than removing them completely, with a program like Camouflage (http://www.briksoftware.com/products/camouflage/), which can hide all your desktop icons...
