This exact thing happened on my Father's Starmax. What I did was simply do a clean install of 8.5 on another (Apple) machine, and copy the system folder over to the StarMax...the OS has run fine...

Well, my upgrade to 8.6 on my PowerBase went smoothly...except I can't access my CD-ROM now. It is a non=apple CD-ROM (it's NEC), and I've been using the CDROM Toolkit version 3.02 up to this point....
