I believe that if you right click on a .pdf icon you get an option to "open with". Select that and pick "Preview" as your app and click on the "always open with" checkbox.

Regarding the OP, I find that kind of posting goes up whenever kids are out of school (summer vacation, winter or spring break, etc.). Things usually clear up while they are busy with the books.
