I've done and use both. Im very picky when it comes to my mac. It would be nice if when you import music into itunes, itunes would check its music store DB first.

No problem here is the location /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/Resources/ The two files that you want to change are MDMenu_LeftPattern.tiff and MDMenu_RightPattern.tiff :)

I don't think it possible to move a menu extra you stated beyond spotlight (unless there is some hack i am un aware of). You can rearrange the other menu extras as you stated though.

2) Make a back-up of the Menu Extra you want to Customize
3) Ctrl-Click on the Menu Extra you want to...
