Try setting your computer screen and projector screen to the exact same resolution. It may be changing resolutions and doing that messed up thing it does when you add or disconnect a monitor.

Maybe even put a little potentiometer in there and drill a little hole so you can change the speed of the fan with a small screwdriver to suit the needs of your PB at certain times.

The oscillator has 4 pins on it and it is pretty easy to change out. If you don't want to modify the main board, you can actually piggyback the oscillator on top of the existing one.
