HDMI is DVI, seriously, it's the same thing. In my experience, VGA sucks for a digital monitor. Always opt for DVI/HDMI is possible.

If it's a hardware problem, it's probably the motherboard. Have you tried it with only one ram riser? Also, make sure any add in cards you have (video etc...) are seated properly. The ram too.
